What Good is the Word of God?

These are four short excerpts from the book.

If the Word of God is so powerful, and so essential, to our lives, should we not be inundated with it every time we attend a worship service? Should the Scriptures not take precedence over every other portion of the service? Should not the teacher teach, and the preacher preach, the Word of God? Should they not “...labour in the word...” (1 Timothy 5:17)?

* * * * *

Many times, people seek signs from the Lord, but what does the Bible say about signs? “And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” (Mark 16:20) The Bible says that the Lord confirms the word. He does not confirm man’s opinions, or man’s theories, or man’s stories. He does not confirm man’s traditions, or even man’s theology. God confirms His Word.

* * * * *

In Luke 24:44-45, Jesus referred to several different books in the Old Testament in order to explain the Scriptures. He “opened their understanding” when He explained the Scriptures by using other Scriptures, and when He confirmed the Word  with the Word. Jesus used the same method of instruction when He spoke to the two men on the road to Emmaus. In a logical and orderly fashion, the Lord Jesus Christ gathered Scriptures from several different Old Testament books and used them together to instruct the two men.

* * * * *

How do children learn the Scriptures unless someone teaches them? If the Scriptures are good for so many things - to make us “wise unto salvation,” “for instruction in righteousness,” that we may be “perfect,” - shouldn’t the Scriptures be taught in abundance? Should not the Word of God flow forth like a mighty river of cleansing, salvation, and instruction? Shouldn’t the worship services be filled with the Word of God?

Exploring Our Relationship with God

The relationship between God and His people is most precious. Each of the three Bible studies contained in this book emphasizes a different aspect of our relationship with the great Almighty God.

The Bible studies are also available as individual books. The Bible studies are:

Seventeen Syllables

Four of the 38 Haiku in Seventeen Syllables

I Call Him Abba, Father

     When I learned these interesting facts about adoption, something exciting stirred deep within my soul. I had been born again through adoption, also. I had been under another spiritual father, the devil. It was pretty obvious because, if God had been my Father, I would have loved Jesus (John 8:42), and I would have kept His commandments (John 14:21). But, I had rebelled exceedingly, purposely, and willfully, against the most high God. The devil was my spiritual father; he had a claim to me, and I had all the rights, privileges, and inheritance of that relationship.
     So, what was my inheritance as a child of the wicked one? Well, Satan comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), so that was my inheritance - to be stolen from, to be killed, and to be destroyed. Who, in their right mind, would want an inheritance like that?
     Jesus said that the devil’s children would do the lusts of their father, and that satan was a murderer and the father of lies (John 8:44). So, now, my inheritance included doing hideous deeds, and lying. Galatians 5:19-21 has a long list of the works of the flesh, which includes wicked actions, shameful attitudes, and horrible emotions. The end result is “they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”
     Satan can steal your peace and joy, can kill your body through drugs and reckless activities, and can destroy your marriage and your family. He can lie to you, make you jealous, corrupt your emotions, cause you to desire things that you should not have, and influence you to commit sins against God and man. This is what comes with our original spiritual birth certificate, with satan as our father.
     But, thank God! It doesn’t have to stay that way. We can be adopted children of God. We can have a new birth certificate, a new Father, and all the rights, privileges, and inheritance of that new relationship. “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God” (I John 3:1)

Reading Logically

II Timothy 1:12

     Now, there’s an interesting sideline to this story. The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for many years, and God had sent Moses to deliver them from their bondage. When the Egyptian army came thundering after them with their chariots and horses, God had protected the Israelites with the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire. Moses had encouraged the people, declaring, “The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” (Exodus 14:14 )
     Then, God miraculously opened the Red Sea and allowed the Israelites to pass safely to the other side. While the Egyptian army pursued the Israelites on the dry bed of the sea, God removed the wheels from the chariots, and caused the sea to come crashing down on the Egyptian army.
     Every year, all of Israel celebrated this great deliverance from Egypt, by telling the story again to their children, and by reminding them of God’s great protection and deliverance. They sang songs of praise to God, had a wonderful Passover meal, and remembered the goodness of God.
     And, now, on the top of the hill, overlooking the valley where Goliath stood, were these Israelites, these men of war, who had been taught, and had celebrated, God’s great deliverance and power all their lives. Many, most likely, had children, and had taught their children, year after year, about God’s intervention in the lives of their forefathers, and how God destroyed their enemy.
     And, yet, these men were “dismayed, and greatly afraid.” (I Samuel 17:11) “And all the men of Israel, when they saw [Goliath], fled from him, and were sore afraid.” (I Samuel 17:24)
     All except David.

The Greatest Parable

     The bride of Christ has been chosen. Now, the price of the bride must be negotiated. The price of the bride had to be paid before the bride could become engaged to the bridegroom, and before the bride could enter the bridegroom’s home.
     And, here’s the major problem. God is a holy God. “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.” Isaiah 6:3. And, He is “righteous in all his ways” Psalms 145:17.
     But, according to Romans 3:10, “There is none righteous, no, not one:” Isaiah 64:6 has even stronger language. “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”
     God is holy and righteous, and mankind is filled with iniquities and unrighteousness. So, how can man, who is sinful and unrighteous, ever enter into the presence of a righteous and holy God?
     So, the bride has been chosen, but is not worthy to enter the Father’s house! And, even if she could, she has received the death penalty because of her sins!
     The price that will be paid for the bride of Christ has to be enough to free her from the death penalty, and to make her righteous so that she may enter the kingdom of God. Nothing less will do.
     Thank God! There is a gift, there is a payment, there is a price, that is high enough to free the bride from the death penalty and give her eternal life. But, it only comes “through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
